Intense Gales Leave Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to stay indoors as severe gales strike the region.

Severe gusts hitting speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 properties experiencing outages and forced officials to call off in excess of 100 aircraft departures, based on domestic outlets.

The gales are impacting the complete southern region and southern sections of the North Island, according to the weather forecasting body.

Officials in New Zealand have announced uncommon severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in key areas including Wellington and Canterbury.

Locals have been encouraged to stay indoors, stay off roads, and get ready for more electricity and network failures.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Measures

The power cut appears to be affecting homes predominantly in the South Island, although authorities report that energy was being slowly brought back.

Local media have indicated that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, whereas trees and electricity poles have been knocked down by the gales.

Within the capital, a individual was killed after being struck by a wooden fragment at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Additionally in the city, a female was swept into oncoming traffic on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was recorded in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services entering and leaving the city have been suspended because of the winds, and certain highways and community centers are also closed.

Meanwhile local leaders have issued a state of emergency, to assist emergency management operations.

Work Stoppages Amid Severe Weather

The powerful gales on this day come as tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers take part in what has been described as a "significant labor action", requesting improved salaries and workplace environments.

Yet the severe conditions has pressured them to change certain arrangements, with some outdoor rallies shifted to interior venues or cancelled.

Similar gusts are impacting the nearby nation, causing a high-temperature event to the country's outback.

Agencies have declared burning restrictions for concern about bushfires.
